Hello, I’m Rae.
I’m a lifelong lover of books using my degree in editing and publishing to help authors bring their stories to life.
My Editing Philosophy
I approach every editing project like a supportive friend would: I believe in your brilliance while also helping you put your best foot forward. I don’t want to create MY dream version of your novel. I want to create YOUR dream version of your novel. To this end, I focus on editing triage. Years of working on tight deadlines has taught me to quickly spot the difference between significant plot holes and the false alarm of my personal preferences. I will help you fix the former, and you will never hear about the latter.
I offer three main promises as an editor:
I will share my reasoning behind all major edits.
I will not overwhelm you with unnecessary edits.
I will strive to preserve your authorial voice and creative vision.
Services
-
A developmental edit focuses on the big-picture aspects of your novel: the plot, character development, world-building, structure, POV, in-world logic, and magic system (if applicable). I’ll work with you to ensure that every piece of your story fits together to realize your creative vision. This service includes comments made directly in your manuscript, an editorial letter summarizing the strengths of your novel and suggestions for improvement, a style sheet, and a 60-minute call or an email exchange to address any questions you have about the contents of the editorial letter or to discuss your plans to implement changes. The price of this service is $0.02 per word.
-
Consider this option if you already have two or three specific concerns in mind that fit within the following categories: plot, character development, world-building, structure, POV, in-world logic, and magic systems (if applicable). Alternatively, I can read through your manuscript and highlight two or three main things for you to consider. You will receive my report in the form of a short editorial letter. This option does not include in-manuscript comments, a style sheet, or a call to discuss my suggestions. It includes the editorial letter and one follow-up email if you would like to ask for clarification or discuss your plans for revision. This option could be a good fit for new authors, authors who have specific concerns about their manuscript, authors on a budget, and authors who are worried about being overwhelmed by a full edit. The price for this service is $45 for every 10,000 words.
-
During a line edit, I’ll focus on the flow of your manuscript from chapter to chapter, paragraph to paragraph, and line to line. This option is a good fit for writers who want to polish their prose, refine their style, or enhance the clarity of their writing. We’ll work at the sentence level to improve transitions, readability, and pacing; perfect word choices; maintain a consistent point of view; and remove inconsistencies and redundancies. Line editing is all about the craft of writing and does not include edits to the plot. Because line editing involves rearranging and rewriting sentences, it does not guarantee an error-free draft. This service includes comments made within the manuscript and up to two 60-minute calls to discuss suggested edits OR up to three clarifying emails. The price for this service is $0.03 per word.
-
Choose this budget-friendly option if you have a specific scene you want to work on or a handful of sentences that aren’t flowing the way you want. This service includes suggested edits within your document and one follow-up email to address any questions you may have. The price for this service is $25 for up to 5,000 words.
-
You’re ready for a copyedit when you’re satisfied with your overall story and your writing at the sentence level. The goal of copyediting is to provide an initial polish to prepare the final draft of your manuscript for querying or self-publishing. I’ll look most closely at grammar, spelling, and punctuation. This service includes edits made directly in your document and a style sheet or updates to an existing style sheet. The price of this service is $0.01 per word.
Testimonials
“I have been working with Rae for the last four years and have always been pleased with her work. She is efficient, accurate, and reliable in returning edits within the agreed upon timeframe. My writing projects are always very niche, so I appreciate that Rae is mindful of stylistic choices that match the niche I am writing for and does not superimpose her own style or preferences on my writing.”
Lydia F.
“When Rae is the editor, I don’t dread the red pen. I know everything she points out is for the benefit of the piece. She always keeps my voice in mind so I feel I don’t have to compromise style for clairty. Rae makes me a better writer.”
